Where are the U.S. Virgin Islands?
The US Virgin Islands are located just east of Puerto Rico, and only a few miles west of the British Virgin Islands. The three islands --St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix-- are part of the Leeward Island chain.
Why Visit the USVI?
The US Virgin Islands are a US territory and combine both American culture and Caribbean beauty, food and climate. When flying in from the US, you don’t even need a passport to visit.
St. John is the least developed of the three US Virgin Islands. More than half of the island is preserved as a National Park. The Virgin Islands National Park includes a stretch of beaches along the north shore that are world renowned for their beauty. St. John is best known for its natural beauty, its beaches, the excellent snorkeling right off shore, the charming town of Cruz Bay and its miles of scenic hiking trails.
St. Thomas is known for its 40 beautiful beaches, notably Magens Bay and Sapphire Beach; the picturesque harbor town of Charlotte Amalie; its duty-free shops and historic sites, such as Bluebeard's Castle and Fort Christian.
St. Croix is smaller than St. Thomas, but also has beaches, including Cane Bay, as well as historic sugar plantations and the Cruzan rum distillery.
What Is the Best Time to Visit the USVI?
The US Virgin Islands are lovely year round. The driest season is between November and April, when high temperatures hover in the 80s and lows are in the mid to low 60s.
The least crowded time of year is between May and October. Accommodations are also somewhat less expensive during this period.
How to get to the U.S. Virgin Islands
Vacationers to the US Virgin Islands fly into either Cyril E King Airport on St Thomas or Henry E Rohlsen Airport in Christiansted on St Croix. St John is accessed by a short ferry ride from one of two ports in St Thomas. There are many non-stop flights to the USVI from cities in the United States and Canada, including New York City, Miami, Detroit, Toronto, Atlanta and Houston.
Visitors from the United States are not required to have a passport, although you will need one if they plan to travel to the nearby British Virgin Islands such as Virgin Gorda or Tortola – which are only a short ferry ride away from the USVI.
Travel from Canada requires a change of plane en route. Flight time to the USVI is approximately 4 hours from New York City, 2.5 hours from Miami and 6.25 hours from Toronto. Canadian citizens are required to have a valid passport that has at least 180 days validity left on it. No visa is required for Canadian citizens staying 90 days or less.
What are the top five things to do in the USVI?
There are so many fun and exciting things to do in the US Virgin Islands, you'll want to reserve your luxury USVI villa for at least seven days. Stay two weeks and you still won't be able to do and see everything. Just a few of the most popular things to see and do on St John, St Thomas and St Croix include:
Exploring USVI National Park on St John
USVI National Park takes up more than 60 percent of the island of St John. This 5,500-acre park is easily accessible by ferry from the Red Hook port in St Thomas and is well known for its public beaches, and scenic hiking trails through the tropical rainforest.
Learning about USVI History, Art & Culture at the Many Museums & Historic Sites
The three islands of the US Virgin Islands have a long and varied history. You can learn more about the islands' past at the many historic sites and museums there, including the Annaberg Sugar Plantation on St John, the French Heritage Museum on St Thomas, and Fort Christian on St Croix.
Duty-Free Shopping
The US Virgin Islands are well known for their good buys on luxury consumer goods and spirits. Not only are goods exempt from import duty, but US citizens have a greater customs limit when they visit these islands than they do when they return from most other parts of the world. Good buys include wine and liquor, perfume, jewelry and designer clothing.
Relaxing on the Beaches
The three US Virgin Islands have dozens of extraordinary beaches. There are quiet, romantic beaches; vibrant active beaches for families and even a couple of clothing-optional beaches. Whatever your idea of the perfect beach is, you'll find it here in the USVI. Some of our favorites include Trunk Bay, Cinnamon Bay and Maho Bay on St John, Magens Bay on St Thomas, and Cane Bay on St Croix.
Savoring the Local Cuisine
One of the highlights of any trip to the USVI is sampling the many restaurants on the islands. Although the atmosphere on the islands is casual, you'll find fine dining establishments as well as casually chic beachfront eateries and local "shacks" with some of the best, fresh seafood on the islands. We particularly like The Beach Bay, Extra Virgin and The Longboard in Cruz Bay on St John, the Twisted Cork Cafe on St Thomas and Rum Runner on St Croix.
