Taos is located in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of north-central New Mexico. The city of around 5,700 permanent residents is located about 2.5 hours northeast of Albuquerque. The region has been a popular ski area since the mid-1950s and consists of four distinct ski areas--Taos Ski Valley, Red River ski area, Sipapu ski area and Angel Fire ski area. The ski season ranges from mid-November until mid-April, depending on the snowfall.
However, Taos isn't just a ski resort. The area is home to a thriving art community as well as the Taos Pueblo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and still home to 65 members of the Pueblo Native American tribe.
Summer recreation in Taos includes fly fishing, hot air balloon rides, golfing, llama trekking and enjoying the area's many hiking and biking trails.
Taos is served by Taos Regional Airport, located about six miles from town. Commercial flights are somewhat seasonal in Taos. During the ski season, from November through mid-April, you can fly non-stop to Taos from Austin, Dallas, San Diego and Los Angeles via Taos Air. During the rest of the year, you can fly into Albuquerque and take a short, 20-minute flight from there to your Taos rental house or hotel.
Visitors can also fly directly into Albuquerque International Airport, which is approximately 2.5 hours by car from Taos, and rent a car or take the Taos Ski Valley Airport Shuttle to travel to Taos. There are non-stop flights year-round to Albuquerque from numerous US cities, including Atlanta, Baltimore, Denver, Chicago, Orlando and Seattle.
Another alternate airport is Santa Fe Airport, approximately 90 minutes away from Taos. There are non-stop flights to Santa Fe from Phoenix, Dallas and Denver.

Taos is a four-season destination, so there's no wrong time to visit. The ski season lasts roughly between mid-November and mid-April, depending on the snowfall.
