Sun Valley is a quintessential North American ski resort, the first in the United States. Since its early days as a resort destination of the rich and famous, it has morphed into a family-oriented four-season vacation destination.
For lodging options vacationers can choose from secluded log cabins to in-town condos, from rooms in resort hotels to luxurious, large private homes. This is a place to drink in the beauty of nature and to find pleasure in simple things, like the breeze blowing through the trees or the colors of the sunset. But there is absolutely no reason to forgo creature comforts. WIMCO Villas offers a selection of hand-picked Sun Valley rental properties just waiting for you, no matter what you have in mind.

Plan Your Sun Valley Vacation
As in any prime tourist destination, you would expect to find some great hotels. That's also true in Sun Valley. Among the best-known is the Sun Valley Inn. It was first opened in 1937. Now completely remodeled, it is a full convention center, with a host of amenities.
Other five-star hotel choices are the Limelight in Ketchum, with a fitness room, health club and spa, local transportation, bountiful breakfasts and package plans for every season, and the charming chalet-style Knob Hill Inn with an indoor pool, hot tub and sauna for ultimate relaxation in any season.
No one will dispute that staying in a luxury hotel is a grand experience. But so is the privacy and comfort of having a private home all to yourself. Your schedule is totally up to you and doing "what comes naturally" is the only requirement.
It's all up to you!
Whatever your choice, WIMCO Villas vacation planners and concierge staff will handle transportation, book reservations and provide insider tips. Dinner out to celebrate a special occasion? No problem. Hang-gliding lessons? Can do! An itinerary for a half-day drive through the mountains with a picnic in a mountain meadow? We can make that happen as well.
We can also arrange for a private chef to prepare a special dinner in your vacation rental home - every night, if you wish. Just tell us your favorite snacks and beverages, and we'll have the refrigerator stocked for your arrival. In short, we'll personalize your vacation to your exact desires.
Sun Valley is a four-season resort, nestled into the spectacular Rocky Mountain landscape near Ketchum, Idaho. With a storybook setting of snow-capped peaks and mountain meadows. Winter can begin early and last until mid-April in these mountains, but it's the winter season that spawned Sun Valley's reputation. Skiers of all skill levels, snowboarders and kids who just like to play in the snow all love it!
Many of Hollywood's most beloved stars of the '40s and 50s regularly skied and partied in Sun Valley, and it still holds a certain mystique. There are challenging runs on Bald Mountain that attract both Olympic hopefuls and past champions, and calmer slopes for families and beginners on Dollar Mountain.
In all seasons, though, Sun Valley can be delightful. In spring, summer and fall, there is plenty to do - hiking and running, mountain biking, boating and fishing and hang gliding and paragliding, golfing, horseback riding, or simply doing nothing and enjoying every minute of it. Outdoor activities are always the prime attraction here.
There is so much to explore, or one can simply enjoy the solitude and natural splendor of the area. There's plenty of that - towering pines, aspens or white birch, fast-running streams and lots of blue sky above!
Sun Valley Ski Resort has trails on both Bald Mountain and Dollar Mountain, influenced by great Swiss ski resorts. The "new-fangled" invention of the chairlift, however, is what set Sun Valley apart. Today, it still shines!
It's a destination for serious skiers; Sun Valley holds the world record for per hour lift capacity per skier. Dollar Mountain Progression Park is a contemporary wonder, just as the chairlift was in 1936.
Novice skiers and children can work on skills and progress to higher levels of difficulty on a personal timetable. Themed trails on Bald Mountain are uniquely appealing, and snowboarders flock to Rotarun Ski Area.
Ski enthusiasts and outdoor lovers would probably say there is no bad time to visit Sun Valley. Winter sports are always dependent on the weather and the snowfall, so "best times" can vary from year to year. Winter travel is also always a consideration.
In early spring and late fall, as well, snow can interfere with plans. But late spring, summer and early fall are typically beautiful in the mountains, and a wide variety of outdoor activities - except for skiing - are reason enough to visit.
It once was a bit difficult to reach Sun Valley, but no longer. Many carriers, including major airlines and discount regional carriers, offer direct flights to Sun Valley. United once advertised service from more than 200 U.S. airports and 100 international cities. American, Delta, Jet Blue, Frontier and Alaska Airlines all fly into Sun Valley.
Ketchum is approximately two and a half hours, by car, from Boise, so if you like road trips, that's also a great way to experience the lure of the West and rural Idaho. Once in Sun Valley, you won't have a problem getting around. There is free bus service to whisk you to the ski runs and, it's a small town.
Many resort hotels offer supplemental transportation services. And WIMCO vacation consultants will make alternate arrangements in accordance with your needs, perhaps a rental vehicle or a car and driver for sightseeing.
Well, skiing would top the list, of course!
After that, it's simply up to you. The Alpine golf greens have a backdrop of mountains and sky, and you'll have a good workout in pristine surroundings. If you're out for an adventure, try paraskiing; but it's not for the faint of heart.
Entire families can enjoy mountain biking or fat tire biking on the surrounding trails, and there is plenty of fish to be caught in mountain streams and local rivers. Flyfish for brown trout in Silver Creek, rainbow trout in Big Wood River, or cast your line in the Lost River or Salmon River.
No matter what the season, you will get to enjoy a variety of activities, all close to your Sun Valley luxury lodging.
